RE: Votre carte de sécurité sociale est expirée (2024-02-29)

Overview

Threat actors collecting credit card credentials

Explanation

This phishing involves collecting credit card credentials by impersonating Centre commun de la sécurité sociale (CCSS). The e-mail claims that the Luxembourgish social security card needs to be renewed. A new card can allegedly be ordered by clicking on the blue button (“Commander ma nouvelle carte”).

Clicking on the button takes the victim to a page where they first have to enter some personal details. In a further step, they have to select a delivery option after which private data are requested. Next, the victim has to enter their credit card details. After submitting these data, they receive confirmation that their card is on its way. Finally, the victim sees the official “guichet.lu” page.

All the steps described above have taken place on pages under the malicious domain ‘public-lu.com’ .

Prevention

If you are uncertain about the authenticity of an email, do not hesitate to contact the entity that seems to have sent you the email using a safe communication manner, using the phone for example (no phone number from the untrusted email must be used in order to verify the authenticity).
If you are working for the Luxembourgish government or are using any of the GOVCERT.LU services, it is important to forward phishing emails to us (using Reporting an incident or the Outlook button). This will allow us to take down phishing websites and protect members of our constituency.
